In Merano, mobility is an integral part of the city experience. Every day, residents and visitors travel between the historic centre, railway stations, hotels, and the Passer promenades. In this context, the taxi service is evolving to integrate with a digital system that makes travel more efficient and connected.
Thanks to Open Data Hub’s Data Sharing service, taxi drivers in Merano can securely and controllably share their real-time location and availability. This technical integration is being carried out in collaboration with Biesse, the technology provider for the dispatch centre and Smart Taxi platform, which manages the operational infrastructure of the service. This is more than just a technological upgrade; each taxi becomes a reliable source of data, contributing to a more efficient and coordinated system.
Knowing where a vehicle is and whether it is available enables applications to assign the nearest taxi to a customer, thereby reducing waiting times and optimising routes. The impact is tangible: fewer empty kilometres, less urban traffic and lower emissions. For residents and visitors alike, this means a faster, more transparent service that meets the demands of modern mobility.
This shared data can also be integrated into journey planning tools, such as Open Trip Planner, which is accessible via the Open Data Hub platform. This makes taxis part of a broader multimodal system alongside buses and trains, offering combined travel solutions that are updated in real time.

The Taxi Merano project shows how collaboration between local operators, technology providers, and data platforms can create value for the local area.
Would you also like to share data securely and intelligently?
Mauro BottI decided to take part in the project because I believe it is important to keep up with the times. By sharing my data through the platform, I expect to gain greater visibility, reduce idle time, and receive more local bookings. This system already works very well in large cities, and I am convinced that it will bring significant benefits here in Merano too.”
